Preparation

There's always a lot to do before a vacation. There's a TON to do before Burning Man. You have to take everything you need to survive for your time in the desert. There are only a few things available to you in Black Rock City: portapotties, ice and, of course, cappuccino!

We took a giant duffel bag, a huge suitcase, a travellers backpack, the bag for our 20x13 tent (which had it's own trolley wheels!) and 2 coolers that were all packed full of camping gear, costumes, glowsticks, bumbles and other desert necessities. See our packing list!

This year, we both took the plunge and had our hair dyed. Our friend Renee bleached all the color out of our hair then catered to our every coloring whim.

Brian went for the fire look and I chose pink and ultraviolet. Both looked stunning on departure.

Both GLOWED in the black light! Cool!!

Once we were packed, dyed and had our carryons packed, we were off to Reno for a little gambling, a lot of loading up on groceries, baby wipes, rental bikes and lumber. Oh and WATER! Between the two of us we went through almost 45 gallons in the 10 days we were on the playa.

A note about our rental car: it's advised that burners NOT tell the car rental agencies where they're really taking the vehicle for the week. They tend to add 'event tax' and cleaning charges to your bill no matter the condition of the car when you return it. We were very lucky that despite the agents direct inquiries about Burning Man, they were none the wiser and upgraded us to a small SUV. Good thing too. As you can see, it wouldn't have all fitted in your average midsize car.
