MAY IS MULTI-CULTURAL AWARENESS MONTH

During the month of May, the Food Service and Nutrition Education Department will be celebrating Multi-Cultural Awareness Month with a special menu every Friday. Our delicious fare will include foods representing Asian, Hispanic, West Indian, Mexican, Italian, and African American cultures. As students learn about the various cultures, please include a discussion about the diet. Our department would like to have the students review the menus and food. Please send their critiques to Carole Kurtz, Food Services Director.

NUTRITION AND SPORTS TEAM UP AGAIN
During the week of May 18-21, we will be celebrating Sports Nutrition in the Hartford Public Schools. Our menu will be sports focused, and we will be giving sports related prizes to students who participate in the breakfast and lunch programs. This year, the high school student athletes will be visiting physical education classes in the elementary schools to speak with students about the importance of a healthy diet for good performance and the goals of being a scholar athlete. If you would like a student athlete to visit your physical education class at 2:00 p.m., please call Candace Annis or Susan Davis - 297-8490.

WIN "GOT MILK" TEE SHIRTS

In addition to the tee shirt, students have a chance to win a trip to ride 5 of the best roller coasters in the country by watching "Toonami" a popular children's show on the Cartoon Network. BULKELEY HIGH SCHOOL GEOGRAPHY CLASS
The students in Ms. Fasi's Geography class continued to learn about world geography and the diet of the country they are studying.  They have enjoyed homemade pasta during their presentations about Italy, and French bread and cheeses when they learned about France. Ten students went to Costa Del Sol and enjoyed a Spanish meal of Paella.

Did you know.....
.....New health advice emerges daily.... Never change the way you live based on a single study, particularly when the news does not give you the complete context of the study.
.....Eating more calories than you burn adds pounds to the body, and for most people these excess calories come from eating too much fat.
.....Honey and brown sugar have no nutritional advantages over sucrose (table sugar).
....."Supersizing" your order may cost a few pennies more but it doubles your caloric intake.
