JANUARY IS NATIONAL CITRUS MONTH
The Food Services and Nutrition Education Department is celebrating National Citrus Month by serving a variety of citrus fruits and juices at breakfast and lunch. The recommendations from the Food Guide Pyramid are to eat five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables daily for a healthy diet. Many recommended servings of fruits and vegetables come from the meals students receive at school. A citrus fruit we will be serving is tangerine. Tangerines are sweet and they have a bright, appetizing color. Students enjoy them because they are easy and fun to peel, section and eat. One medium tangerine contains approximately 37 calories and 26 milligrams of vitamin C. The Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin C for children is 45 milligrams a day. Teenagers and adults need 60 milligrams daily.

Our Department will be serving samples of citrus fruits to all the Middle School students during the month. Visit our special table filled with brochures and fruit in the Middle school dining rooms in February.

FEBRUARY IS NATIONAL HEART MONTH

Heart disease is the number one killer of American women age 35 and older. Several factors increase women's risk of heart disease. We cannot control some of these such as increasing age, your family health history and race. However, the four factors that we can change to reduce the risk for heart disease are smoking, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and physical inactivity. To receive the booklet Take Charge! A Woman's Guide to Fighting Heart Disease, please contact Susan Davis, Nutrition Education Coordinator 297-8490.
