The Chinese New Year was Celebrated with School Lunch
On Wednesday, February 5, the self contained kitchen elementary schools celebrated the Year of the Ram for the Chinese New Year. We hope you enjoyed the lunch of Beef Terriyaki Strips, Vegetable Fried Rice, Mini Egg Roll, Pineapple and Orange Cup, a Fortune Cookie and Low fat milk. If your students enjoyed this meal, please have them write to Ms. Carole Kurtz, Director of Food Services.
National School Breakfast Week

During the week of March 3-7, the Food Service staff will be celebrating National School Breakfast Week with the theme "Make Your Breakfast Count." Encourage your students to come to school early so they can enjoy some new breakfast items. We would like to invite you to join your students during that week and throughout the year. When the students see the adults in the school eating breakfast and encouraging them, they will probably sit and join you. Your greatest benefits are you will be ready to work and the students will be ready to learn.
See "Red" on Valentine's Day

Red fruits and vegetables are "Red-hot and Healthy". They contain many health promoting phytochemicals including lycopene. Some "red" fruits and vegetables include red apples, cherries, cranberries, red grapes, red grapefruit, raspberries, strawberries, watermelon, beets, red cabbage, red peppers, radishes, red onions, rhubarb, and tomatoes. Some "red" ideas for Valentine's Day (or any day) include: pasta with tomato sauce, tossed salad with red peppers, tossed salad with cherry or grape tomatoes, tomato soup, coleslaw made with red cabbage, cranberry sauce, and oatmeal topped with cranraisins.
Get Healthy Hartford Projects in the Schools
Batchelder School sponsored a relaxation afternoon at Mainly Tea in Wethersfield. Thirty staff members sipped tea, ate tea sandwiches, scones and desserts as they listened to information about Get Healthy Hartford, Curves for Women, and Alternative Therapy for stress. Rhonda Niles, the school counselor, coordinated this program for their staff.

Wish School sponsored a Stress Workshop in December for their staff, teachers, and parents. The workshop was presented by Dr. David Spitz from Bristol. Dr. Spitz used humor and enthusiasm to create a paradigm shift in the audience so they felt better equipped to deal the with daily stressors that normally affect us.

The Learning Corridor staff is doing something to get rid of the extra pounds by organizing a Weight Watchers at school group. They are looking for more members. Please contact Lorraine Szymanski, the school nurse.

Cheryl Daniels, the Wellness Coordinator for the Board is coordinating Heart and Hypertension Workshops at HPHS on Monday, February 24 for all staff . Please contact Cheryl Daniels at 695-8686 for the dates of future workshops.

The University of Hartford Magnet School and The Learning Corridor staff's Get Healthy Hartford teams are organizing bowling teams.

Get Healthy- Change Your Audience
Life is a theater. Invite your audience carefully. Not everyone is healthy enough to have a front row seat in our lives. There are some people that need to be loved from a distance.

It is amazing what you can accomplish when you let go, or at least minimize your time with draining, negative, incompatible, not-going-anywhere relationships or friendships. Observe the relationships around you.

Pay attention. Which ones lift and which ones lean? Which ones encourage and which ones discourage? Which ones are on a path of growth uphill and which ones are going downhill?

When you leave certain people, do you feel better or worse? Which ones always have drama or don't really understand, know or appreciate you?

The more you seek quality, respect, growth, peace of mind, love, and truth around you, the easier it will become for you to decide who gets to sit in the front row and who should move to the balcony of your life.

Thought for the Month:

The best way to relax your face is to smile
