FEBRUARY IS HEART MONTH
Take time this month to educate the students about the realities of heart disease and its prevention. We can all encourage healthy habits for students. Here are some suggestions:

1.   Set a good example. You can be a good role model by eating healthy food and planning exercise into your day.
2.  Educate the students. Explain how smoking can hurt their bodies; how exercise and nutrition can keep them healthy and strong.
3. Encourage the students. Put limits on their television and computer time so they can get involved in age appropriate sports and lessons.

WAYS TO SHOW YOU CARE IN FEBRUARY
(AND ALL THE REST OF THE YEAR)

1. Smile at everyone you meet.
2. Admit when you are wrong.
3. Give a compliment.
4. Offer someone your place in line.
5. Write a nice letter to someone.
6. Pass on a compliment
7. Practice little kindnesses--anonymously. 8. Inspire someone.
9. Mail someone a cartoon you like.
10. Give someone else credit.

MARCH 2-6 IS NATIONAL SCHOOL BREAKFAST WEEK

Deborah Fournier, Food Services Field Supervisor, is planning an exciting week of activities, including prizes and movies, for students who participate in the before school breakfast program. Please encourage your students to eat breakfast so they will be better prepared for learning.

BULKELEY HIGH SCHOOL'S GEOGRAPHY CLASS

Students in Ms. Charlotte Fasi's Geography class are learning more than the location of various countries around the world. They are learning about the food from the different countries as well.

"We visited LaFonda, a little Columbian restaurant on Franklin Avenue. The Food was tasty and nicely presented. Some example of the entrees were; Bandeja Montanera, white rice with beans and fried pork skin; chicharron. A typical Columbian dish is  Chuletta de Cerdo, which is a pork chop with rice and beans".  Mailyn Velez, a student in the class, submitted this restaurant review.

WHERE'S YOUR MUSTACHE?

This year Weaver, Hartford Public and Bulkeley will be competing in the Cartons for Computers program. Help our students win money for computers and cheerleading uniforms by drinking a carton or two of milk with lunch when you are visiting these schools. We hope to have some fun with a little competition between the Beavers, Owls and Bulldogs as all of the students consume more milk to build strong bones and teeth.

Did you know?

Folate or folic acid helps to prevent birth defects of the spine and now studies show it reduces heart attacks and strokes. There also may be a link between a high folate intake and reduced risk of colorectal and cervical cancers. Great folate foods are spinach, broccoli, strawberries, oranges or orange juice, cantaloupe, lentils, liver, and oatmeal.
