Dear Parent/Guardian:

The Hartford Public School System participates in the National School Lunch Program/School Breakfast program. Meals are planned by a Registered Dietitian using the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Healthy School Meals Initiative. Meals are served every school day. Menus are posted in each classroom, on Public Access Television, and in the Hartford Courant.

The Department of Food Services is committed to providing quality nutritious meals to all students in the Hartford Public Schools. The link between nutrition and learning has been well documented. Children who eat well perform better and are better able to solve problems. Beginning in September 1998, the Food Service Department will be offering an exciting new universal meals program. This means that any student in the Hartford Public Schools may eat breakfast and lunch on every school day without worrying about tickets or money. All students may participate, without charge, in our meal programs regardless of their economic status.

Parents of students new to the Hartford Public Schools as of the 1998-99 school year will only be required to complete an income survey (available at all schools) for the Food Service Department or submit their State of Connecticut Direct Certification letter when registering. Students enrolled prior to the 1998-99 school year will be automatically ready to participate. They will not need to submit any documentation or forms to obtain free meals.

Las Escuelas Públicas de Hartford participan en el Programa Nacional de Almuerzos y Desayunos Escolares. Una dietista certificada diseña las comidas usando las Recomedaciones Dietéticas para norteamericanos y la Iniciativa de Comidas Escolares Saludables. Se sirven comidas todos los días. El menu escolar es distribuido por los salónes. Usted también puede encontrar el menu en el canal de Televisión de Acceso Publico y en el Hartford Courant.

El Departamento de Servició de Alimentos esta dedicado a proveer comidas nutritivas y de calidad a todos los estudiantes en las escuelas de Hartford. El enlace entre la nutrición y la enseñansa ha sido bien documentado. Niños que comen bien, trabajan mejor y son capaces de resolver problemas. Comenzando en septiembre de 1998, el Departamento de Servicios de Alimentos ofrecerá un nuevo y muy interesante programa universal de comidas. Esto significa que cualquier estudiante en las escuela publicas de Hartford podra desayunar y almuerzar todos los días sin tener que preocuparse por boletos o dinero.
