Melee units are the cheapest to produce, another benefit is that existing units can get upgraded to Champion.
I recommend upgrading towards Champion as soon as you can during the game.
I also recomend that you upgrade armor bonuses at the Blacksmith before upgrading infantry attack bonuses.
Reason I say this is because there is very little armor differences between any of the units listed above.
The armor upgrades can give your infantry more of an advantage over your opponent's infantry.
