Spring 2005
Team Name: Stars
Location: Legends Hall of Fame Grill
Division: B
Finished: 2nd....to last...again
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Steve Capano, Dan Stuart,
Scott Leonard, Eric Ripley, Dale Weiss, Kevin Cosgrove
It seems as if the Stars are enjoying their new home bar as they played their second consecutive season at Legends. Although the darts were tough this season, the Stars continue to have fun as always. Unfortunately, the Stars lost Scott, one of the team's most solid, reliable shooters, mid-way through the season. Scott Dale and Kevin filled in the voids left by G-Rod and Kiran. In fact, Dale made his presence known early on in the season when he won his first ever 301 match with a double-cork for an out.
Fall 2004
Team Name: Stars
Location: Legends Hall of Fame Grill
Division: B
Finished: 2nd....to last
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Steve Capano, Dan Stuart,
Scott Leonard, Eric Ripley, Rod Lamb (G-Rod), Kiran Sears
The Stars again change their homebase for the third time in as many seasons. The atmosphere at Legends is great. There’s plenty of room, good food, and large screen TVs (not above the dart board!! cough...cough...Good Times..cough...cough). We hoped to have some of the success we had last season, but shaky attendance and some really stiff competition kept us down. Some memorable moments of last season include watching some of the Red Sox ALCS games on Tuesday nights during the matches and then watching the Sox win their first World Series in 86 years. I can't think of any memorable quotes from the season. Feel free to add some.
Spring 2004
Team Name: Stars
Location: West Street
Grill
Division: C
Finished: 1st
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Steve Capano, Dan Stuart,
Scott Leonard, Eric Ripley, Rod Lamb (G-Rod), Kiran Sears
With a change of venue, the Stars recaptured the success of seasons past. Although finishing in first place, the Stars were knocked out of the playoffs in the first round at Crossroads in Boston. The home-away playoff format has been tough on the Stars in the past. Scott invents a new name for the double cork – the “Cinnamon Ring.” One of the highlights of the season was Eric’s solo cricket victory in Week 9 against two good shooters. Look for the trophy coming soon to the virtual trophy room.
Fall 2003
(Team Picture)
Team Name: Stars, still
Location: Champions
Division: C
Finished: 7th (yuck)
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Steve Capano, Dan Stuart,
Scott Leonard, Eric Ripley, Rod Lamb (G-Rod)
The Stars went at it again in the C division with only 8 shooters on the roster. Some memorable moments include Payson winning a 601 match with a double cork. Also, Frank, Scott, and Eric won a short-handed match with a score of 6-5. Otherwise, the team pretty much got abused most of the season. Do they still do that playoff thing at the end of each season?
Song of the Season - "We Gotta Get of This Place"
Spring 2003
Team Name: Stars, still
Location: Champions
Division: C
Finished: 5th
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Steve Capano, Dan Stuart,
Kirk Fields, Scott Leonard, Eric Ripley, Griffin Ryder
After Gregg and Bob left the team, veteran Eric and rookie Griffin (err...Rod....err...G-Rod) stepped in to fill the void. Frank shot a Ton-80 for the first time ever. Yay. Otherwise, it was a pretty uneventful season. The pizza at Champions improved somewhat. The Stars web site is getting stale.
Quote of the season, collectively, "Yawn."
Fall 2002
Team Name: Stars
Location: Champions
Division: B
Finished: 5th
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Gregg Nyberg, Steve Capano, Dan Stuart, Kirk Fields, Bob Papaluca, Scott Leonard
With no roster changes, the Stars go at it in the B division again. Unfortunately, this was the last season for Gregg. He will be sorely missed, not just because he was a great dart player, but also because he became good friends with all of us. Scott shoots a Ton-80 during week four. That’s a Ton-80 every season for Scott so far. Kirk designs and prints new team jerseys. A combination of losing Gregg and playing against former A-division teams made for a tough season. Paul sings, “Roxanne, you don’t have to put on the red light…”
Quote of the season by Kirk: “Keeping score is like jury duty.”
Summer 2002
Team Name: Stars
Location: Champions
Division: Infantry
Finished: 4 of 6
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Gregg Nyberg, Steve Capano, Dan Stuart, Kirk Fields, Bob Papaluca, Scott Leonard
Not too much happening here. Attendance was good for summer league. Congratulations to Gregg for shooting a Ton-80, again.
Spring 2002
Team Name: Stars
Location: Champions
Division: B (and we thought D was bad)
Finished: 4th
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Gregg Nyberg, Steve Capano, Dan Stuart, Kirk Fields, Bob Papaluca, Scott Leonard
Scott replaces George and fills that void we had in our roster over the last several seasons. After our temporary 3-year move to Good Times, the team decided that it was time to move on. We realized we played much better away...so we picked Champions after the bar owner, Bob, enthusiastically offered to sponsor us. The cardboard pizza and the surround-sound wresting matches at Good Times were becoming tiresome.
Well, well, well…it turned out to be the most successful season in Stars history. After barely squeaking into the playoffs, we made it all the way to the B division championship match against the Parkway Pub (who placed third in our division by the way). To say it was a close match would be an understatement. The match came down to star wars in the third game of the sixth 301 match with Payson at the line! Although Payson hit the wire several times, the opponent was the first to slide it in. It was a very exciting match. I think it took 3 years off Payson’s life (that does not include effects from secondhand smoke). Check out the playoff results. ----> boston_playoffs.pdf
Congratulations to Scott who shot a Ton-80 during the second week of his rookie season. Beginners luck? Nahhh.
Quote of the season: “Kirk plays better on drugs than Steve.”
Fall 2001
Team Name: Stars
Location: Good Times
Division: D
Finshed: 4th
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Gregg Nyberg, Steve
Capano, Dan Stuart, Kirk Fields, Bob Papaluca, George Ghareeb
Bob officially replaces Susan, and George replaces Mike. Ironically, Mike showed up more often than George (and tied him for the number of wins). We had some memorable (and not so memorable moments) this season. The World Trade Center bombings occur on the day of match number 2. Coincidentally, Payson had flown to NYC earlier that morning. Miraculously, Payson showed up that night, but was a bit shaken up. In a related matter - Steve patents the "Anthrax Shot" after accidentally stumbling upon it at the Dilboy Post match.
Of course, the most exciting memory of the season was the upset victory against the number one seeded team in the first playoff round at the Last Drop. And even more incredible, we beat the Champions team at home for another upset victory in round 2. But in the third round, we got knocked out by division rival Khoury's. It was a great ending to a somewhat uneventful season.
Hats off to Gregg who shot a Ton-80 again (and won the game!...sorry Gregg, I couldn't resist) and to Kirk who is fast becoming one of the team's most valuable players.
Spring 2001
Team Name: Stars
Location: Good Times
Division: F
Finshed: 3rd
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Gregg Nyberg, Steve
Capano, Mike Santos, Dan Stuart, Kirk Fields, Susan Calandra
Kirk and Susan replace Brian and Jim, although Susan moved to Michigan halfway through the season. The team was again without a female presence. Bob Papaluca stepped in about halfway through the season defecting from another team from the same division. Bob was a pleasant surprise. He is a reliable dart veteran and a very consistent thrower. Another pleasant surprise was Kirk. We voted Kirk "Rookie of the Year" in his first season. He just kept getting better every match. The team just keeps getting better!
Achievements to Note: Gregg throws a Ton-80.
Fall 2000
Team Name: Stars
Location: Good Times
Division: E
Finshed: 5th
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Gregg Nyberg, Steve
Capano, Mike Santos, Dan Stuart, Jim Boden, Brian Devasto
Jim and Brian replace Steve L. and George. Although Brian was never heard from, we had a pretty solid "core" group of shooters with freshman rookie Jim and sophomore shooters Dan and Mike contributing substantially to the team effort.
Spring 2000
Team Name: Stars
Location: Good Times
Division: E
Finshed: 3rd
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Gregg Nyberg, Steve
Capano, George Ghareeb, Mike Santos, Steve LaChance, Dan Stuart
This was the first season that the team was not represented by the other sex. Steve L. (who?) and Dan replace the departing Gina and Karl. George coined the phrase "Orbs of Lust." Do orbs float in a hot tub?
Fall 1999
Team Name: Stars
Location: Good Times
Division: E
Finished: 6th
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Gregg Nyberg, Payson Whitney, Steve
Capano, Karl Zygarowski, George Ghareeb, Gina Nyberg, Mike Santos
First time in the E League - ouch. We actually did better than our record shows. Due to scheduling difficulties, we played three games shorthanded this season. Mike replaces Negative Ed. Karl calls it quits midway through the season. In the first game of the season, Steve shoots a R09!
Summer 1999
Attendance was marginal. I'd like to forget this season.
Spring 1999

Team Name: Stars
Location: Good Times
Division: F
Finished: 1st
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Gregg Nyberg, Steve
Capano, Karl Zygarowski, George Ghareeb, Ed Hubbard, Gina Nyberg
Our most successful season! (must have been either the team web page or Ed's weekly internet guest) We finished first place in our division, but we were knocked out in the first round of playoffs. Gina replaces Susan. Quotes of note: "Don't be a Dart Tart." and "It's not whether you win or lose, just hurry up so we can go home."
Fall 1998
Team name: Stars
Location: Good Times
Division: G
Finished: 3rd
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Gregg Nyberg, Steve Capano,
Karl Zygarowski, George Ghareeb, Ed Hubbard, Susan Calandra
This was our first season playing at Good Times - back in the G League. Ed, George and Susan replace Linda (a/k/a Crazy), Jeff and Mike. This season was a lot of fun. We finished the season in 3rd place. However, we got eliminated (not without a valiant fight) in the first round of the playoffs. Some of the highlights for the year include the introduction of Gina-Sue to the lineup. And who could forget the 11-0 win against the Dart Tarts - a team first.
Spring 1998

Division: F
Finished: 5th
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Gregg Nyberg, Steve
Capano, Karl Zygarowski, Jeff Hershberger, Linda Hawkes, Mike Skeehan
This was our first time in F League (almost made play-offs) Finished 5th.
Some of the highlights for the year include the Payson Plethora of Points or
"Tri-P" and the Greg Nyberg polite golf clap.
Fall 1997
Team name: Snug Stars

Division: G
Finished: 4th
Players: Frank Calandra, Paul Grden, Payson Whitney, Gregg Nyberg, Steve
Capano, Karl Zygarowski, Jeff Hershberger, Linda Hawkes, Mike Skeehan
The stars underwent some significant personnel changes. Obtained Mike, Steve and Linda (some good acquisitions in the Fall 1997 draft season). Played in G League - Finished 4th - Made several rounds of the playoffs - got a nice plaque. One of the funnest seasons ever. Some of the highlights for the season included the introduction of the "Ziggy Buttstick" and the cool T-Shirts that Steve designed.

Thanks to Dr. Porter, the team doctor, and his patented ergo-dynamic darts for helping us work through an injury-plagued season. Also, I'd like to give a special thanks to Brooks Brothers for the great team uniforms.
