GRANDMOTHERS

Carries of a fragile future

And perpetual waters of the womb

Strength of ancestry

Bearing, tolling, cooking

For ever----- the immortal memory,

The immortal women

The past forever teases us with

Prospective; inculcated into our

Being,

As the pistil in a flower;

Ancient yet novel in the eyes of

Grandchildren;

Pioneer women; Cotton field women;

Braiders of a thread that goes on

And on; weathering the travails of

Birth;

Birth of the world;

Birth of subtle hope;

Spring of genuine continuity.

From the length of the Mississippi,

To the deep of the Grand Canyon;

Grandmothers endured; implanted in

Every crevice of this country;

Surviving beyond sorrow,

The miracle inside us.
