Autumn's Legacy

Autumn comes on whispering breeze

Whistling gently through the trees

The greens turn to golds and reds

Like giant paintbrushes dipped in color

Against a palette sky of blue and white

Soft colorful carpets underfoot crunch

With the sounds of squirrels hoarding nuts

Jumping and running through piles of leaves

Storing their bounty in planters and eaves

Like miserly Scrooges hiding their prize

The mornings are cool and days are sunny

Evenings need coverlets and warm blankets

Cats stop shedding and their fur grows lush

Needing less care with scissors and brush

Their thick ruff like a full clowns collar

Summer may have left for many months

Winter is coming swift and on icy feet

Meanwhile we can enjoy nature's circus

With vivid colors and prancing maples

Deep blood red with veins of orange entwined

Ah! Autumn! Such a show by Mother Nature

Her cloak of many shades fluttering about

Her artists hand in every mountain and plain

She weaves her magic in our eyes and minds

Brightens our world before the drab days to come
