Having loaded only one of the two disks of Office Pro 2000 (since I do not want to access anyparts of the second disk) I was successful. Then when I dragged the icons for Word and Excel to the desktop, they disappeared from the Explorer listing. I go to Programs and I cannot find either one, but they do work from the desk top. Question. Why aren't these two programs showing up on Explorer?
BillMacLean, bill_maclean@west-point.org
REPLY: My guess is that when you dragged the icons to the desktop, you actually dragged the programs there. Shortcuts on the desktop have little arrows, I bet those don't. Move them back to where they belong under Programsby by cutting and pasting. Then, if you want shortcuts on the desktop, right click and drag the programs to the desktop. When you let go of the right button, choose "create shortcut here".

I am running outlook 2003. I have my receive option set to download email headers only. Unfortunately, on one occasion I down loaded a header but body/the message got deleted on the server (Don't know how!!). Now I can't receive any emails because Outlook is trying to download or delete the body of the header.
Any ideas how to fix this problem?

| Purchasing a new computer
|
14 Feb 2006 |
I am going to have to buy a new computer and will need more help than just
going to the store and choosing one. Can anyone recommend a business that could
help me solve the following issues when making my purchase? What about Plug
N Play who recently made a presentation to the group ??
My genealogy program is backed up on an I-Omega 250 internal drive and
operates on Windows 98.
I will need to buy a new genealogy program, but will need the capability of
transferring info from Windows 98 to a newer operating system.
This is all complicated by the fact that my present computer just crashed.
(I am writing this now on an 11-year old computer which I still have, but
will need to look into purchasing a replacement computer as soon as possible.)
Any suggestions would be most welcome!
Barbara Love,
Barmanlove@aol.com
REPLY: Barbara,I got my computer at PC's for Everyone in Cambridge and have been very happy with their service and prices. As regards your genealogy program, if it runs on Windows 98, it will almost certainly run on Windows XP, the current operating system, as well. Your data files can also be transferred to a new machine without problems.

| Viruses in Compressed Files |
26 Dec 2004 |
Most anti-virus programs are pretty good at detecting virus files, but they are less good at detecting viruses embedded in compressed files. To check this out, I've put a harmless test virus on our web site as well as compressed versions of it. Click on eicar.com; every anti-virus program should detect this as a virus. Don't worry, it's completely harmless. Now click on eicar.zip, a zipped version of the same thing. Finally, click on eicar.exe, a self-extracting version of eicar.com. Does your system detect these compressed versions?
Mine didn't, and it bothered me. It turns out that it can be done with a command line scan and I finally found an easy and free
way to accomplish this.
I use AVG Free as my anti-virus program. It can be downloaded from
here. To do a command line scan, you seem to need a download manager which senses that you're trying to download a file with your browser and takes over the task. I haven't figured out a way to do this directly from a browser.
The download manager I use is called Star Downloader and it can be downloaded from here. When you configure it, make sure it's integrated with Internet Explorer and/or Firefox and/or Opera, whichever you are using. Now go to the Anti_Virus option. Browse to and select ...\AVG Free\avgw.exe. Where it says "Parameters to executable", insert
"/SE %f" without the quotes.
That's it. your done. AVG will scan the downloaded file for an embedded virus and let you know if there is one. Verify this with eicar.zip and eicar.com. It will not delete it. You have to do that manually.

| IEEE Meetings of General Interest |
26 Aug 2004 |
There are two IEEE section meetings in September that I hope to attend,
and which may be of interest to those who use the Internet and those
technically inclined, which are open to the public.
The Life Members Section will be addressed by Tim Berners-Lee, the
inventor (he really did it, Al Gore did not) of the Internet. He will
tell all about it at 4PM (refreshments at 3:30) on Monday September 27 at
the Lincoln Labs auditorium in Hansom Field.
The Chief Technical Officer of American Superconductor Corp. will talk on
"The New Generation of Superconductor Electric Power Equipment" at 6PM
(refreshments at 5:30) on Wednesday September 15 at Maxtor Corp. in
Shrewsbury. I plan to contact the meeting organizer to get directions.
If you are interested, contact me and I will give you the details,
including registration.

| DOS Memory Problems |

I am having a problems with a DOS based program. I am running Windows 95.
When I installed "Master of Orion" through DOS,
it worked. But then I read in the README file
that it needed 1040 kb of EMS, which was at the time disabled. It said
that I should go into config.sys and change the part where it said
NOEMS.
I have had experience with hacking into games and screwing
them up, so I made a backup of config.sys
before viewing it in an editor and working with it. I did what it said
for me to do and then went back to my DOS screen. I set EMS from auto to
1040 and ran Orion again. Now I got the message "ORION NEEDS 575 KB OF
CONVENTIONAL MEMORY TO RUN." I deleted every single DOS-based game
on my hard drive and formatted D and E. Windows is on C and I'm thinking of reinstalling it since it's pretty messed up. Is
there any way I can possibly get any more conventional memory!?!? Help!
Ernest Marquardt, ernmar@cheqnet.net
REPLY: You write that the game ran OK with the original configuration of config.sys. Why don't you just go back to those settings in config.sys?

REPLY: Unfortunately Orion
only ran the first time I tried.
It didn't actually run, either, it crashed after I got to the main menu. What now?

In attempting to open certain files, I occasionally run into a message showing me a list of programs and asking me for a selection to "open with..". If Word or Notepad will not work (I get nothing but a bunch of symbols) how do I open a readable file?
Anne Jahares, ann88@rcn.com
REPLY: When you right click on a file and click on "open with", you can choose another program than the ones shown. If you see only symbols when you try to open the file with Word or Notepad, the file is formatted for another program. If you can tell from the file extension what that program is, you can select it. If you can't, try opening it with Quick View. Quick View has a lot of formats built into it.

I'm looking for some tech information in order to set up a URL for
uploading a computer program.
Sewall B Potter, spotter632@netzero.net
REPLY: To upload a program so others can access it by going to a specific URL, you need a web page. Most ISP's provide their customers with a free web page, generally with 10MB. Call Tech Support and ask them how to start a web page, to what address you should upload and what its URL will be. You will then need an ftp program, (probably available from your ISP as well) to upload your program. Not as tough as it sounds.

| Post Your Photos on the Internet |
June 25, 2003 |
For those of you that have a lot of digital photos that you would like to share with family and friends, there's an easy way to put them on the Internet without having to design your own web site. You don't need any special software and you don't need to know html (The language used to design web sites). There are a number of web sites that specialize in displaying people's photographs for free or for very little money. You can have any number of galleries and sub-galleries. If you want to restrict access to one or more of your galleries to just people you know, you can protect them with a password.
The service I decided to use is called PhotoShare and it's at http://www.photoshare.co.nz. It happens to be in New Zealand, but as far as the user is concerned, it could well be next door. To join costs six dollars a year, with the first three months free. If you go to the site, you can look at a variety of galleries that people have put up. My website is called garryz in case you're interested.

| Cleaning Computer
|
21 Jun 2003
|
PC Magazine confirms what I said at the last meeting about opening your
computer case and cleaning out dust.
On page 91 of the June 2003 issue, it recommends doing this twice a year.
My experience is that unless you are in an exceedingly dusty
environment, in which you should not be breathing, every couple of years
is enough, and that is what our speaker recommended.
Opening the case and cleaning it safely is trivial, if you obey a few
simple precautions.

| Anti-Virus Check |
Oct. 5, 2002 |
To protect yourself against viruses, trojans and worms, you need to keep your anti-virus program up to date. But even more important, the anti-virus program needs to be turned on and working properly. It is important that this be verified or you won't get much protection.
For test purposes, there is a program called eicar.com which is totally harmless but is recognized by all anti-virus programs as a "virus". I have compressed the eicar.com file into eicar.zip and eicar.exe Eicar should be detected even in compressed form but not necessarily deleted. Click on the link below to download it and see if it gets detected. If it doesn't, figure out why because otherwise you won't have any protection. To download, click on
eicar.zip and/or eicar.exe. As a second step, you might also want to check if your system detects viruses in e-mail attachments. To do that, download eicar.zip, turning off your anti-virus program if necessary, and send yourself some e-mail with eicar.zip as an attachment. After turning your virus protection back on, download your e-mail. Ideally, you should immediately be notified that an attachment has a virus.
Since writing the above, I've been told that Norton Anti-Virus doesn't detect viruses inside zipped files. That's not so good. However, you can still check out your system by unzipping eicar.zip and using eicar.com as an attachment. That should certainly trigger an alarm. If it doesn't, you don't have much protection against viruses.

| Digital Recording |
29 Jun 2002 |
The original plan was to copy 200 Mid-Eastern (Greek, Turkish, Armenian and Arabic) records onto cassettes, but now that I have a CD burner with my new Dell system, I thought I would skip a step!
I have several questions on whether or not the equipment I have will do the job? I have some 78 rpm records, an old Garad changer which is fed into a Marantz receiver. The changer has no preamp and I understand that you need 1 or 1.5 volts going into the sound card? I have a "SoundBlaster" sound card (PSI 60v), which doesn't have a line in jack.
If anyone in the group is into digital recording I would appreciate an email or call (617) 926-0186, days or evenings.
Thanks.

| Downloading Adobe Acrobat

20 May 2002 |
I am having trouble downloading Adobe Acrobat to my Dell w/WindowsXP. I ask it to download to file and pick 'desktop' and when I am finished, I click on the desktop icon and it seems to unzip ok. When I go to open the .pdf form I want, It will give me a window showing it is zipping and an hour glass on my cursor, then the hourglass goes away and the form is nowwhere to be seen! Help! I have deleted and redownloaded this puppy twice now, and still am having problems. Thanks for any help you have.
IamJBJ@aol.com
REPLY: After reading your post I decided to upgrade my Acrobat reader. So I went
to www.adobe.com and selected 'download acrobat reader' under the
support tab. In the next page I selected the free reader. On the next page
the only thing you have to do is select the platform (Win2000/XP in your
case), and then click on 'download'. My preference is to DL to a download
folder where I put every such program. Then I ran the program which was
ar505enu.exe. The program found where I had my previous installation
and performed the installation/upgrade. Then I was able to read pdf files
without a problem.
You might want to check the file associations. This is accessed by going
to 'folder options' in the control panel. Select File Types tab and make
sure that the pdf file type points to the acrobat reader. Just click once on
the pdf file type and it should say that it is opened with Acrobat Reader
5.0. This association should have been made in the installation of the
reader. If this is OK you might want to try a different pdf file from the one
that hasn't worked.

| An Unwelcome Bootup Message |
14 May 2002 |
Recently, I started getting a notification during bootup "...legacy
keyboard-detected, legacy mouse-detected, USB
legacy-enabled...etc...press (del) to resume". So, I now
have to do that as well as click off the password drop down. A wonderful tech at Dell suggested
reformatting my hard drive which I declined. Another Dell tech asked me if I used Windows Update. When I said yes,
he said that one of them caused this problem. He cautioned
me not to automatically accept Windows Updates...that I should question
Microsoft if I don't understand the purpose of a particular update. I
just pass the info along.
Mack Rosenbaum, mack.rosenbaum@verizon.net
REPLY: A similiar thing happened to me (DELL Dimension).
This is what I found out: The system BIOS stopps when and if it encounters
an error during boot-up. In my case it was a "S.M.A.R.T. alert" from one of
my hard disk drives (I verified this by running the appropriate test
utility, downloaded from the manufacturer's homepage).
According to the disk manufacturer this indicates a serious problem, so I
replaced the hard disk - and got rid of the "unwelcome bootup message"
(...and hope for warranty replacement).

| Problems with Juno |
17 Apr 2002 |
If you're connected to the Internet via Juno, you should be aware of the following, as contributed by Matt Slate:
1. Per your Service Agreement, Juno can run or permit others to run software on your computer for commercial purposes and unrelated to its service to you.
2. Data produced by this software can be stored on your computer. It will be uploaded to Juno during a subsequent connection, initiated either by you or by the software.
3.On Matt's computer, this data used almost 1 GB of disk space. It included two files infected with viruses.
4.Matt found that when connecting to Juno, the computer spent more time "Processing Incoming
Data" than processing messages.
5.Juno stores your address book in a file called addrbook.nv. If your computer crashes, Juno may decide to store this file in a different directory than it was before. This can cause two copies of your address book to exist on your computer, one of which may be more up to date than the other. As a result, the next time you use the address book you may be using obsolete information

| How to get an answer to any question |
14 Mar 2002 |
The best way that I've found to get a solution to almost any problem is to query the newsgroups. The problem may be computer related, a sick gerbil or where to buy inexpensive water colors. The trick is to put in the right keywords. Also, make Re: one of your keywords. That way you get answers to your problem instead of people with the same problem that you have. Generally it is best not to query specific newsgroups because you don't know where an answer might be coming from. If it looks like most relevant answers come from a specific or related newsgroups, you can specify that on a second scan.
Anyway, the URL is: http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search
Here is an example:
Suppose you want to transfer files between a computer running Windows 98 and Windows XP and you want to do it via the parallel ports. A good set of keywords might be:
Re: parallel port file transfer xp 98
If you tried that, you will have gotten 108 replies, but the second one : Direct file transfer from 98 to XP looks pretty good to me. Next time you have a problem, give it a try.

Since I responded to Anne Jahares in February, I have learned that if you have RCN and put Stop All Network Connection on Zone Alarm, when RCN does its random sweep to verify your connection and finds it missing, it will not do another sweep for 36 hours. The only way to get reconnected in lesser time is to call a tech. I now refrain from putting a stop on all connection and just let the Firewall do its work. If I am not going to be around for a long period of time I now just shut down the computer.
