Lexington November 18, Residents of the "Belfry Hill" neighborhood (just southwest of Lexington Center, between Massachusetts Avenue, Waltham Street, and Worthen Road) met on Sunday to establish and inaugurate a neighborhood association for their local area. The primary objectives of the association are to strengthen social ties between neighbors and to provide a forum for discussing and developing common positions on the issues face the neighborhood. BHNA joins the list of the other active Lexington neighborhood associations: Merriam Hill, East Lexington, South Lexington, Five Fields and Peacock Farms.
Over 50 people attended the meeting, held at the Hancock United Church of Christ. Omar Hussain acted as moderator for the meeting and gave an overview of the association's goals. Gresh Lattimore and Ruth Thomas provided a brief history of the association's predecessor that had convened to address zoning and traffic concerns in the 70's and early 80's (some needs to give the correct dates). Joseph Lehar led a lively discussion on the proposed by-laws for the association.
Over 40 households (about 10 percent of the neighborhood) signed up as members at the inaugural meeting by paying their dues for 2002. The new members voted the association into existence and unanimously elected the following 9 directors to run the organization until the first general meeting planned for February 2002.
The interim directors will, with input from all neighbors, organize the first Annual Meeting; continue to encourage neighbors to become new members; finalize the proposed by-laws and arrange social events during the interim period.
