John Campbell (33 Muzzey St.) reported that he had organized an informal meeting of concerned neighbors to discuss the impending sale of the Christian Science church at the corner of Muzzey and Forest Sts. The church is for sale at an asking price of $1.6 million. The current building offers 9,600 square feet and is an attractive feature of the neighborhood, having been designed by Willard Brown, the architect of the original Cary Library. Campbell reported that the neighbors are particularly concerned about traffic on Forest St. The street is narrow and is heavily crossed by pedestrians, particularly students at Lexington High School. An increase in weekday traffic would cause congestion and increase the risk of accidents at the intersection of Muzzey and Forest Sts. The neighbors are also concerned about parking, since the church does not have offstreet parking and Forest St. has only limited parking along the street. Park Drive, which runs behind the church, was donated to the town as a beautiful natural area and should not be used for parking. There is a possibility that the town might try to buy the church for use as a school administration building. The neighbors would not be comfortable with this unless the parking and traffic issues could be resolved. Most neighbors were more comfortable with residential use for the site than with institutional use. Beverly Kelley gave a quick update on the current status of the church sale, There are a number of serious approaches, including one or two churches, several single residential offers, some developers looking in to the possibility of converting the building to residential use, and a consortium of 14 parents proposing a teen activity center. LexHab has no interest. The church is principally concerned with an immediate sale, so buyers requiring a zoning change are less attractive. It was agreed that the BHNA should make the residents' views clear on this topic.
