Recreation Committee Town of Lexington, Massachusetts 12 April, 2003. Dear Members of the Committee, The BHNA is pleased with the attention your committee has focused on the issue of noise from the tennis court's bang-board. Given the well-documented evidence of excessive noise presented at your last hearing by one of our members, Richard Petrasso, we feel it is important that the Town adopt a long-term solution that brings the noise into compliance with Lexington by-laws. Richard has presented suggestions that would solve the problem at a cost of $3,000-$10,000. In the light of the much larger recent investments for race track and tennis court renovations, we feel that this small additional expense is completely justified. We especially favour the purchase of a new bang-board made of noise-reducing material for two reasons. Such a board would solve the problem in the long term, and the expense is very likely to be recovered in a few years by savings on maintenance, given the more durable nature of modern materials. We also feel that it is essential that a short-term arrangement be made to reduce the annoyance to the tennis court's abutters, until a long-term solution is put into effect. In particular, we would support a reduction by half an hour in the bang-board's permitted hours of use in the morning, to 8am on weekdays and 9am on weekends. Sincerely, Joseph Lehár, 33 Parker St, Lexington, for the directors of the BHNA, after a vote on 11 April 2003.
