Bird Culbertson


Mary Ann Garrett

Bird Culbertson was born in South Carolina on December 10, 1808. He died in Chambers County, Alabama on May 24, 1891. It is believed that his full name may have been Samuel Bird Culbertson IV,

He was the son of Samuel Bird Culbertson III, The grandson of Captain Samuel Culbertson II and Celia (maiden name unknown), and the great grandson of Samuel Culbertson I who in turn was the son of "Irish" Andrew Culbertson.   He had a brother Green Culbertson, who lived in Alabama, Mississipi and Louisiana. Another brother was named Thomas. It is believed that he and his brothers were raised by their grandmother Celia they were orphaned by 1820

There is a collection of letters written during the Civil War by his two nephews. Here are some excerpts concerning Bird :

Camp Near Pollard, Ala. Nov. 27, 1862

Dear Sisters ....."Uncle Bird staid all night with us night before last. He had been to some salt works in Clark County to buy salt for his neighbors. He looks pretty old - his beard and hair is almost white, his head is bald. He favors father a good deal. His eyes & eye brows and nose are just like father's. He has a good deal more beard than father. Oh, I wish you could see him. He is a jolly old fellow. He said he thought he would go back to the salt works after he went home & made arrangements for his children. He says he can make a great deal more there than at home. Mary Jane is in Mobile with her husband. Uncle said she spoke of staying till Christmas.....

Mary Ann Garrett was born on June 18, 1818 in Upson County, Georgia, the second daughter of John Lumpkin Garrett, Sr. and Martha Jane Greer.

On October 16, 1836 Mary Ann married Bird Culbertson, She and Bird had six children. She died on March 17, 1854 in Chambers County, Alabama when she was 35 years old, She was an Aunt of the famous sheriff "Pat Garrett" who shot and killed Billy-the-Kid
