Frederick Stroppel
FREDERICK STROPPEL is a New York-based playwright who has had productions of his
work at the Ensemble Studio Theatre, the John Houseman Theater, Synchronicity
Space, the Theater Row Theater, the West Bank Cafe, and The 29th Street
Repertory Theater. His full-length comedy FORTUNE’S FOOLS was produced
Off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theater, and has been published by Samuel
French, Inc. His one-act play JUDGMENT CALL was a winner of the Jury Prize at
the 1997 Aspen Comedy Festival. TALES FROM THE MANHATTAN WOODS, his modern
version of “Die Fledermaus”, was staged at the Producer’s Club in 1998. Last
summer, two new collections of one-acts, KIDNEY STONES and MORTAL COILS, were
performed at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe and the Mint Space, both in NYC. And last
summer, FORTUNE’S FOOLS joined the repertory of the Madach Kamera in Budapest,
Hungary.
In Los Angeles, Mr. Stroppel’s one-act plays DOMESTIC VIOLENCE and PACKAGE DEAL
were winners of 1994 Drama-Logue Awards, and his comedy ACTOR! was staged at the
Egyptian Arena Theatre in 2000. His published plays, all with Samuel French,
include DO OVER, A CHANCE MEETING, A GOOD MAN, ACTOR!, and two collections of
one-acts: SINGLE AND PROUD AND OTHER PLAYS and JUDGMENT CALL AND OTHER PLAYS. He
is also a founding member of THIRD RAIL COMEDY, a New York City-based sketch
group.
Mr. Stroppel co-wrote the screenplay for A BROOKLYN STATE OF MIND, which
featured Danny Aiello and Vincent Spano. Previous screenplays include the
independent films ALMOST PREGNANT and DARK SIDE OF GENIUS. Television work
includes two seasons as a staff writer for the HBO series A LITTLE CURIOUS. He
served as story editor for the Nickelodeon series OSWALD and the Playhouse
Disney series JOJO’s CIRCUS, and is currently writing for CLIFFORD’S PUPPY DAYS.
Mr. Stroppel has served as a Resident Playwright with Performers At Work Theater
Company, and the Courtyard Players. He has belonged to the B.M.I. Lehman Engel
Musical Theatre Librettists Workshop for the past ten years. He is a member of
the Dramatists Guild, the Writers Guild of America East, and PEN International.
