The Other Robbins Papers: a presentation to the Acton Historical Society,
concerning the 18th and 19th century papers donated to the
Society by Joyce Robbins May 16th, 1998 pages 12 & 13

Joseph Robbins, Jr., was born in 1752, he would have seemed the one to have been sent to alert Isaac Davis on April 19,1775. But he was not, because he was no longer living at home. He had been married in February of that year and was living with his bride in the saltbox house at the Southeast corner of Harris and Great Roads. Joe Jr., first wife was Elizabeth Moore of Sudbury. They had a daughter in December 1775. Elizabeth died two months later. Joe Jr. married Rebecca Dansmore of Lunenburg in December of 1777. They had eight children. Obviously any of his papers after 1775 would not be in this collection, except for his commission papers.

There is one other paper which belonged to Joseph Jr. Postmarked "On His Majesty's Service," it was addressed to Ensign Joseph Robbins and sent from Adjutant Adams in Weston February 1st, 1773. It reads "Sir. the field Officers agree to meet on Tuesday day the 16th Instant at Mr. Jonathan Haywood's Tavern in Concord at 11 O'clock morning in order to hear the Complaint of yur people against you. and your Defence, at which Time you are expected to attend. I am your Humble Servant, EIisha Jones." We don't know of many hearings held in taverns. Joseph Jr.'s "Defence" must have prevailed because he eventually became a captain too.

Joseph Jr. died in 1791. His tombstone at Woodlawn reads in part:

In memory of Capt. Joseph Robbins Jr.
who was kill'd by his Waggon July ye 5th, 1791
in the 39 Year of his age.

Also inscribed on the stone is the following:

Death thou hast conque'd me
I by thy dart am slain.
But Christ has conquer'd thee,
and I shall rise again.
