COURSE DESCRIPTION: Grade 7

In seventh grade the areas of study include elements of art, drawing, design, sculpture, painting, graphics, commercial art, ceramics, crafts and art history. Students are expected to discover and enhance their creative potential and to develop appreciation for and sensitivity to art, past and present.

By the end of the year, we will cover the following key concepts and skills during the class:

1. Elements of art - line, shape, form, texture, color.

2. Elements of design - balance, motion, emphasis, contrast, unity.

3. Art as ideas - idea generation, relating art to other disciplines, identifying themes.

4. Discussing art - learning terminology, looking at works of art, class critiques.

5. Drawing - various techniques.

6. Sculpture - relief and in-the-round.

7/ Crafts - the designed, utilitarian object.

8. Computers - uses in art.

The major resources used in these classes include:

Posters, slides and actual examples of art works. Handouts, worksheets, etc. Tools and materials for hands-on activities. Art books.

Students are expected to discover and enhance their creative potential in these areas through the development of good techniques and exposure to a variety of media. Students develop sensitivity to and appreciation of art, past and present.

By the end of the year, we will cover the following key concepts and skills during the class:

1. Drawing people.

2. Painting

3. Sculpture 4. Abstraction

5. Crafts

6. Commercial Art - design, print making, computers, etc.

7. Art appreciation - comparing works, critiques, etc.
