Article from the Marshfield Mariner -- November 5th, 1997
|
I visited Edaville on the weekend of August 17-18, 1996. July 5th, 1996 marked the first public train rides at Edaville since January 1992, when the railroad closed after more than 40 years of operations. The present Edaville Railroad operator is a new company, Edaville Entertainment Company LLC, formed specifically for the purpose of reviving the railroad. The trains being run the weekend I visited included coaches from the original Edaville collection as well as diesel locomotives and passenger cars acquired from various sources throughout the United States. They are working to restore their 1936 Hudswell-Clarke steam locomotive. Hopefully, this will pave the way for a new "Age of Steam" at Edaville. The Edaville Railroad runs for 5.5 miles through the cranberry bogs of Ellis D. Atwood, Inc. Mr. Atwood started the railroad in the 1940s to serve his cranberry business. The name "Edaville" came from his initials. Edavilles's Festival of Lights was a New England Christmas tradition for many years. They are hoping to bring it back in the future, along with new rides, museum collections, seasonal events and other attractions. |
