I've been teaching private music lessons on and off since 1980. My approach has always been informal and accessible, teaching beginning adults and kids mostly by ear. I also teach music reading, theory, and improvisation to some students.

I currently teach fiddle, guitar, piano, mandolin, and Cajun accordion. I've also taught 5-string banjo, tenor banjo, electric bass, upright bass, and ukulele. I teach bluegrass, Cajun, folk, rock, and classical.

My approach with kids is interdisciplinary, sometimes incorporating math (as it relates to music theory), English and social studies (as they relate to song lyrics), the history of folk and rock music, and a lot of humor.

My own training includes nearly 40 years of participating in jam sessions and performances, and taking numerous workshops and lessons on various instruments. In 1998 I earned a master's degree in music at Brown University, where I specialized in American folk and rock music. (I also hold a B.A. in English from NYU.)

Leading a jam session at Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camp, Woodstock, N.Y.
