Hydro Power Contest


RESOURCE CATALOG

The Hydro Power Contest was originally designed for a college-level engineering competition.

We want to support student and faculty efforts to utilize the Hydro Power Contest as an experiential learning tool. We have located and tested a number of items which can be very useful in making a functional competition device or student project.

No items offered in this Resource Catalog will automatically make you a Contest winner. The kits and components offered here will allow you to spend less initial time procuring parts. You'll spend more time solving the open-ended problems posed by the Contest. You'll be testing your ideas sooner. For more information on the Hydro Power Contest, visit the web site at:

TURBINE KIT

The Turbine Kit will include: a garden hose connector, Snap-Loc hose segments, a round orifice nozzle, a flare nozzle, three turbine wheels, a copy of the Contest rules, and additional information.

As stated in the Rules, one of these turbine wheels must be used in the Student Power Class of competition. Any of the Snap-Loc parts may be used as well.

Turbine Kit


ORIGINAL "SWIRLON" KIT

This is the kit provided to contestants for the ‘91 through the ‘99 Contests. The kit consists of a housing, turbine wheel, gear, shield, nozzle, cover, and hose connector.

The turbine wheel is an impulse wheel and has an integral 15-tooth pinion. The mating large gear has 69 teeth.

This kit can be very useful for learning fundamental turbine, mechanism, and rotary motion principles.

A limited number of these kits are available. Orders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

TURBINE WHEELS

Single Inlet Wheel - Suitable for inward or outward radial flow or cross flow. Wheel has 4.0 inch outside diameter, 2.94 inch inside blade clearance, flat hub, 0.1875 inch bore, 28 blades, recessed end disc. Blades are curved and have angular outer edges.

Double Inlet Wheel - Suitable for single or double inlet, inward or outward radial flow or cross flow. Wheel has 3.5 inch outside diameter, 2.375 inch inside blade clearance, solid hub, 0.1875 inch bore, 24 blades, solid flat center disc. Blades are curved and have angular outer edges.

Impeller Wheel - Suitable for inward or outward radial flow or cross flow. Wheel has 3.75 inch outside diameter, 2.375 inch inside blade clearance, solid hub, 0.1875 inch bore, 12 blades, solid stepped disc. Blades are slightly curved and have rounded inner and angular outer edges.

Propeller Wheel - Suitable for axial flow. Wheel has 3.5 inch outside diameter, 1.5 inch blade disc, solid hub, 0.1875 inch bore, 5 blades, solid flat center disc. Blades are curved and have fine angular edges.

Swirlon Wheel - Suitable for peripheral flow. Wheel has 3 inch outside diameter, 2.125 inch inside bucket clearance, solid hub, 0.375 inch bore, 12 buckets, solid center disc. Buckets are curved in two dimensions and have blunt edges.

NOZZLE COMPONENTS

1/4" Snap-Loc Round Nozzles - These nozzles fit on 1/4" Snap-Loc components. They are 1-1/4" long. They come with 1/16", 1/8", or 1/4" discharge orifices.

½" Snap-Loc Round Nozzles - These nozzles fit on ½" Snap-Loc components. They are 1-3/4" long. They come with 1/4", 3/8", or ½" discharge orifices.

½" Snap-Loc Flare Nozzles - These nozzles fit on ½" Snap-Loc components. They come with 1-1/4", 1-1/2", 1-3/4", or 2" wide tips.

SNAP-LOC HOSE COMPONENTS & DEVICES

Male Garden Hose X ½" Female Snap-Loc Fitting - Used to convert from Snap-Loc components to garden hose.

1/4" Snap-Loc X ½" Snap-Loc Reducer - Used to convert from ½" to 1/4" Snap-Loc components. This component is necessary to mount 1/4" nozzles on a ½" Snap-Loc hose system.

½" Snap-Loc Wye - Used to make branches in the ½" Snap-Loc hose system. This component is necessary for mounting multiple nozzles.

½" Snap-Loc Hose Segments - Used to convey water to the nozzles. Segments allow hose to bend hose around the turbine wheel.

½" Male Snap-Loc X Brass Female Garden Hose Fitting - Used to convert from garden hose to ½" Snap-Loc hose system. This component is necessary to attach your device to the male garden hose fitting at the end of the water supply "pigtail" on the test stand.

Assembly Pliers - Plastic pliers used for assembling ½" Snap-Loc components.
