The following list of refreshments for a September 1953 school tea was included in grandmother Swift's recipe file. Grandfather Swift was superintendant of schools in Watertown, Connecticut. The tea was probably for parents or staff at the beginning of a new school year.
I've found the following recipes in the file for the cookies listed above: Ice Box Cookies
Sift flour, baking powder, and salt. Blend sugar and shortening. Break egg in saucer. Add unbeaten with vanilla. Gradually add flour - dough will be soft. Roll, as about an inch diameter log, in waxed paper. Put in ice box. 24 hours later, cut in thin slices and bake at 375 degrees F. for 10 minutes on a greased cookie sheet. For chocolate cookies, add 1 oz. melted chocolate to the egg mixture. Toll House Chocolate Cookies
Cream Comfortable Society Vassar Fudge
3 lb. Coffee A Sugar [ The list of ingredients is all that the recipe card contains. I assume the ingredients are cooked until a soft ball forms when the hot candy is dropped into cold water. It may also be necessary to add the butter and vanilla after the soft ball forms. ] |
