Hart Heraldry

There is considerable information about family heraldry on the web. Although I know of no one named Hart who ever received a coat of arms in England or Ireland, a number of Hart family crests or heralds exist. Certainly as we don't know who Stephan Hart's ancestors were, we don't know of any coat of arms issued to him or his ancestors. If you know of any other Hart coats of arms, please send a color copy with any information you have about its origin. I will add it to this list.

This one, that appears on many of the Stephen Hart web pages, is found in "A Record of the Hart Family of Philadelphia, etc., 1735 - 1920" by Thomas Hart; Edited Privately for the Family; Philadelphia, PA; 1920.

The book describes the armorial bearings of this family as:

  • Arms-Gu (red).
  • A lion passant guardant Or (gold), in base a human heart argent (silver).
  • Crest --- A dexter cubit arm holding a flaming sword; all proper.
  • Motto --- "Fortiter et Fideliter" [Fortitude (or Strength) and Fidelity].

This second crest is very similar to the one above. It includes a similar lion and silver heart, as well as the same motto. This crest was submitted by Matthew Hart who received it from his grandfather, Covell Hart.
