The Descendants of
William Swyft

William Swyft immigrated to Boston about 1630 from Bocking, Essex County, England. He lived in Watertown, Mass. until 1637, when he moved to Sandwich, Mass. William died before January 1643/44 when the inventory of his estate was shown to be £72 11 shillings at the local court. Descendants of William Swyft lived in or near Sandwich for at least the next couple of centuries.

The next Swift that has captured my interest is Julius C. Swift (1792-1876). Julius was born in Warren, CT, but he moved to Edinboro, PA where he had a farm. He also had more than 20 children from 3 different wives. With all these children, he is the ancestor of many Swift descendants. In the Edinboro area, these Swifts were divided into two groups: the Red Swifts and the Black Swifts. The Red Swifts, all with red hair, are descended from Julius' last wife, Lydia Hawkins. The Black Swifts, with black hair, are descended from the other two wives: Betsy Bates or Laura Shove.

If you are descended from either of these Swifts, please send me your Swift stories, gedcom files, pictures or web site pointer, if you would like to share them with others here.
