Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is a prosthodontist and how is s/he different from a general dentist?Prosthodontics is the special branch of dentistry that is dedicated to enhancing both the function and the esthetics of a healthy, natural smile. Developments in modern advancements and state-of-the-art technology enable prosthodontists to repair and restore broken or decayed teeth to ensure a healthy, confident smile and function. Prosthodontists receive an additional two to three years of specialized training at an American Dental Association accredited graduate education program after completing dental school. The additional education and training provide prosthodontists a higher level of skill and experience to deal with dental function and esthetic. Although the main goal of all dental providers is the achieving and maintaining of good oral health, many general dentists do offer some reconstructive services. Prosthodontists, through more specialized training and experience, can offer a better understanding of the issues that require reconstructive dental services and offer a greater array of treatment options to best suit an individual's dental and financial needs. What is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics?Although some states allow a dental provider to be listed as a prosthodontist following two to three years of additional education and training in the field, not all prosthodontists are certified by the American Board of Prosthodontics. Board certification establishes successful completion of a four-part examination. Professionals are subject to re-certification every eight years to establish that knowledge and skills are current in the prosthodontic specialty. Prosthodontists that have been board certified are referred to as a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics. What kind of services does a prosthodontist provide?Services include, but are not limited to crowns, veneers, inlays, dental implants, fixed permanent bridges, removable partial dentures and teeth whitening. What is a crown?A crown is a restorative covering or replacement of the major part of a tooth which has experienced extensive decay or fracture. It is made to reproduce the same aspects, such as strength, appearance and feel, of a natural tooth. What is a veneer?A veneer is a thin layer of tooth-colored material that is bonded to the front of your teeth to improve overall appearance. Materials include, but are not limited to porcelain, ceramic or acrylic resin. What is an inlay/onlay?An inlay or an onlay is a conservative alternative to a full crown, and may be recommended after decay is removed. Tooth-colored material is bonded to the tooth for increased support and strength as well as to restore normal appearance. |
