In this lecture, originally presented at New York's Public Theater, Helen gives an overview of the personal and cultural history that made Papp an iconic figure and shaped his ideas for The New York Shakespeare Festival. The talk is illustrated with over 75 slides and gives an overview of how Joe Papp developed the not-for-profit institution that produced such playwrights as David Rabe and Ntozake Shange and such musicals as Hair and A Chorus Line.
