We are dedicated to furthering homeschool students participation in extracurricular activities at their local public schools
In Pennsylvania, Act 169 of 1988, recognized the right of parents to homeschool. But it never addressed homeschoolers participating in extracurriculars at their public schools. By default, the decision of "equal access" has been left up to the 501 school districts' school boards.
PA Department of Education reports that 45.6% of districts allow homeschoolers in their extracurriculars, while 44% allow them in curriculars.
If half the districts have it, then why not the rest? Some districts have no homeschoolers, some have never been approached about it. But a statewide equal access law can only benefit everyone. Fourteen states now have such laws, with Arizona having the least bureaucratic.
Good-spirited superintendents and school boards are recognizing homeschoolers as good customers, and to help these children, are opening doors once closed to partnership.
Peter B. Hrycenko salutes these education leaders.
