ISO New England helps protect the health of New England's economy and the well-being of its people by ensuring the constant availability of electricity, today and for future generations. ISO New England meets this obligation in three ways: by ensuring the day-to-day reliable operation of New England's bulk power generation and transmission system, by managing comprehensive, regional planning processes, and by overseeing and ensuring the fair administration of the region's wholesale electricity markets.

In this talk, Mr. Ron Coutu will describe how wholesale electricity markets work, who participates in those energy markets and what benefits wholesale energy markets bring to market participants and end consumers. The talk will also introduce other products and ancillary services to help ensure the secure and efficient operation of the bulk electric power system.


Mr. Coutu has a degree in Computer Science and over 30 years experience in power system operation, markets and software design and development. He is the Manager of Business and Technology Solutions for the Business Architecture and Technology group at ISO New England. He has been involved in Electricity Markets design and development since 1996. His responsibilities include development of market solutions and architectural design of the software to implement those
