Missions to the Moon are not included. I do not consider Moon to be in "interplanetary space. " Space telescopes which left Earth orbit, but never approached any other celestial body are not included either. Launch failures are not included, but probes which failed en route are - however briefly, they were part of the far-flung flotilla. All probes are color-coded according to their primary target, but since there were relatively few probes to Outer Planets, and most of them had more than one target, they are all lumped together. Finally, orbiter-lander combinations such as each Viking and Cassini-Huygens, are shown as one probe.
Missions primary targets are marked in the following colors:
Sun Mercury Venus Mars Asteroids Comets Outer planets
Cruise stage of every mission is indicated by Regular hyperlinks.
A spacecraft is hibernation is indicated by (Hyperlinks in parentheses).
Primary operations, i.e. planetary/comet/asteroid/sun encounters and orbital/lander operations are indicated by Black bold hyperlinks. Primary operations also include major periods of star observation (EPOXI mission) for Deep Impact, and time spent collecting interstellar particles for Stardust.
