Calvin Keys, guitar; Tim Hauf, bass; Gaylord Birch, drums.
"An Evening with Calvin Keys", offers us twelve longish pieces spread over two discs. Calvin has a lot to say, and he does it with some style tunefully, melodically and often with the hint of a sigh. There is attentive help from Tim Hauf on bass and Gaylord Birch on drums, as Calvin mostly ambles with us soulfully through some great music; laid back, sometimes delightfully intricate, but always with fine improvisation. We hear, "The Theme" and "All Blues", by Miles Davis; Richard Rodgers's "My Funny Valentine", and much more. The renditions are often deep and from the heart, warm and mellow, and always fully rounded. He finishes off in fine swing with Ralph Rainger's "If I should Lose You". If you like a solo guitar, this is one for you.
