Martin Breinschmid & the Radio Kings
King Size
City Park Records

Martin Breinschmid, vibraphone; Herbert Swoboda, piano, clarinet; Aaron Wonesch, piano; Georg Breinschmid, bass; Walther Grossrubatscher, drums; Guests: Oscar Klein, trumpet; Hans Salomon, tenor saxophone; Woody Schabata, marimba

Another classy affair from what must amount to the City of Vienna house band.

The tunes are all familiar standards. Oscar Klein plays in-your-face open trumpet, Hans Salomon (long an insider's tip in Vienna) contributes with his warm, almost Prez-like tenor on a couple of tracks. Martin Breinschmid creates a beautiful atmosphere on "Nancy With The Laughing Face," and it is here that Herbert Swoboda adds his marvelous piano. The mood is sensuous and the vibraphonist plays as good as any other you are likely to hear. "How Long has This Been Going On" and "I Can't Get Started" are done in tandem and taken slow and easy. Swoboda doubles on clarinet (on "Nuages"), with a beautifully rounded tone. Great attention is given in all cases to melody, and the ensuing improvisations on the entire CD are logical extensions of the same. All in all a beautiful recording session. Recommended to all who appreciate a quality performance.
