Michel Camilo

Solo

Telarc CD-83613

Recorded in the artist's 50th year, this beautifully rendered album represents Camilo's attempt to produce "a deep personal statement that would reflect some of my musical influences, as well as the exotic colors, textures, and nuances which I have been developing into my piano playing the last several years." I'd say he succeeds wonderfully. The 12 compositions represents "a trilogy - the three musical worlds closest to my heart" -including 4 originals, 4 from Brazil, and 4 Jazz Standards. The compositions are well chosen and their sequencing on the CD blends the 3 genres seamlessly. Camilo takes the listener through a variety of moods in each genre, from the romantic to the rlective to the celebratory. The piano is an extension of Camilo, and he expresses himself sensitively and clearly throughout. The session was well produced and engineered, allowing Camilo's sound to shine. Recommended.
