Lloyd Gregory has been on the local Bay Area scene for several decades and is not easy to categorize in terms of style. On this CD, Gregory performs mostly on his Ovation Custom Legend round-back acoustic guitar. Other musicians with whom Gregory has performed appear on the various cuts.
When Gregory ventures into standards like "I Loves You Porgy," his creative depth is demonstrated, his exploration on this tune is just absolutely beautiful and I was sorry it was so short. The title cut, "Free Fallin'," is a tasty, smooth rendering with supporting background vocals. The publicity notes state that "Steve's House" was written in the living room of Stevie Wonder (I bet that is an interesting story in itself) and Gregory also plays electric guitar on this one. "Round Midnight" is sumptuous! On "Snow Bear," Gregory weaves provocative images. Gregory freely crosses over the Jazz genres and each of the twelve cuts on this CD is a gem. I would describe this CD as luscious!
