Brad Shepik Guitar; Tom Rainey drums; Scott
Colley Bass
Brad Shepik is a veteran of the New York downtown scene, best known perhaps
for his subtle guitar work as a member of Dave Douglass's group Tiny Bell
Trio and the pan-Balkan/Near Eastern party band Paradox Trio. Here he foregrounds
his more traditional playing and composing with a recording more likely
to please fans of bop guitar than those of experimental music. The spirit
of Jim Hall and the more introspective side of Bill Frisell haunt this album,
although neither Brad or his cohorts are mere clones. All nine compositions
are by Brad, and while none of them surprise, they all manifest his mastery
of post-bop compositional styles, and the downtown school's penchant for
borrowings from ethnically diverse musics.
