The Los Angeles-based Ken Chan Trio continues its exploration of original repertoire in this 2003 trio session, featuring the bassist Farko Dosumov and the drummer Byron Vannoy. In keeping with modern Jazz conventions, this is a strong, pulse-oriented group; one would be hard pressed to find fault with these performances on a technical level. That said, listeners should be prepared for recurrent backbeats and not-so oblique references to 1970s-era fusion groups before the most memorable rhythmic inventions emerge, especially on the piece "Transformation".
