Bud Shank Quartet with Phil Woods

Bouncing with Bud and Phil Live at Yoshi's

Capri Records 74071-2

On Bouncing with Bud and Phil the legendary alto saxophonists Bud Shank and Phil Woods teamed up in late 2004 for a live recording at Yoshi's Jazz club in Oakland, California. The playing is lively and first rate, with exceptional support from bassist Bob Magnusson, drummer Bill Goodwin, and especially from pianist Mike Wofford, whose playing on this session is truly inspired.

The set opens up with a bright and boppish "Bouncing with Bud," penned by Bud Powell and closes with the bop classic "Minority" with playing from the rhythm section reminiscent of the great trio of Bill Evans, Sam Jones, and Philly Joe Jones. In between, we are treated to some jaunty standards and beautiful ballads, with the beautiful "Helen's Song," "Summer Serenade," and "Gemma's Eyes" as standouts.

The septuagenarian gladiators (as Phil Woods calls himself) and Bud Shank show no signs of slowing down. Their playing is as sharp, vital, and pleasurable as ever.
