I caught Cathi Walkup at Simple Pleasures in San Francisco. She was accompanied by Gerry Grosz on vibes and Robin Lewis on seven-string guitar. This is a regular gig for Cathi on the last Sunday of every month.
There was almost a capacity house when I got there, and the audience was attentive. Cathi sang many tunes from her second CD, Living in a Daydream. Grosz and Lewis were among the musicians on that recording. One of the simple pleasures of this day was watching as well as hearing Gerry Grosz play his vibes. He uses four mallets, and his demeanor is that of a very focused musician. But I guess you have to be focused to play with four mallets.
Robin Lewis played his seven-string guitar in a very relaxed manner on "Robbin's Nest." The tune was not named for him, but he took charge as if it were.
Cathi, in her usual professional style, charmed you with her treatment of all the lyrics she chose to treat you to. I just can't get enough of her singing.
Her CDs Night Owl and Living in a Daydream are included in our mail-order catalog, Jazz Now Direct.
