Oceanography
NOAA - (National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration) Information on the marine sciences, weather and ocean information,
the GLOBE Program, satellite imagery and more!
NOAA - Ocean - information on
tides, waves, seafloor topography, buoys, marine sanctuaries, Aquarius and more!
Lab Data and Information (Plotting buoys, ocean circulation, seafloor topography, tides and other physical oceanography information)
"THE
BRIDGE" - From Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)
Information about waves, tides, and currents. This site will lead
to to drifter buoy data.
NDBC
(National Data Buoy Center -
NOAA) - Get meteorological and oceanographic information on specific buoys.
Project NOPP Drifters -
(National Oceanographic Partnership Program) provides data on drifter buoys.
This site offers information on building a drifter buoy. This site will show
the different parts of the drifter buoys and explain the purpose of each part.
COAST
- Ocean Basin and Coastal Morphology. Click on this site to
download the coastal margin and deep sea floor features using the Cosmos
Plug-In. You need this plug-in if you run the visualizations at home.
The Briny Deep
-
This site will help you with your briny deep lab. There is information on
physical
oceanography such as salinity, temperature, light penetration, density stratification, the SOFAR level and more!
Beneath The Sea -
View a ship using sonar to determine the depth of the ocean and
to map the ocean floor! Exciting Stuff!!!!!
Global Scale
Circulation - This site offers additional information on the Coriolis Effect (not force),
convection currents, and global air circulation cells.
OAR
(Office of
Atmospheric Research - NOAA) - 2 activities on Ocean Temperature and Ocean Currents.
Satellites and Data
SeaWiFS Project -
(Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor Project) provides some quantitative
data on the ocean. Changes in ocean color indicate changes in types and quantities
of marine phytoplankton.
SeaWiFS Image
Archive - Download images that show sea surface temperature, phytoplankton concentration,
Atlantic coastline images and more!
SeaWiFS Image
Colorscales - Are you trying to determine what the colors mean? This colorscale will
help with ocean chlorophyll and land vegetation.
Sea Surface Temperatures - This
site downloaded from satellite data from the University of Wisconsin gives real-time
satellite data on current sea surface temperatures.
The CCAR(Colorado
Center for Astrodynamic Research)/TOPEX/Poseidon Home Page. This site provides
archived altimeter data as well as information on altimetry. Real-time T/P satellite
positions, image processing and remote sensing as well as information on GPS.
There is also information on space and orbital debris.
Satellite
Oceanography Applications - This site offers information on uses of altimetry data such as
hurricane monitoring, commercial fishing, marine mammal locations, sport sailing, ocean
circulation, and more!
TOPEX/Poseidon
and Jason 1- Satellite images and information. This project is a joint venture between
the U.S. and France. This satellite measures sea level, global ocean circulation,
and the connection between the ocean and the atmosphere.
Jason
1
- Satellite that will replace the TOPEX. Launched December 7, 2001.
Data on ocean circulation, sea surface topography and the interaction of the
ocean and the atmosphere
OSEI - (Operational Significant Event
Imagery) The OSEI team produces imagery of natural or anthropogenic environmental events.
Find the Image of the Day!
Marine Animals
NOAA
Acoustics Monitoring Program - study the effects of man-made noise on marine
life as well as the use of underwater acoustic techniques to monitor the
movement of whales in the open ocean.
Cities
Under The Sea: Coral Reefs - This is the Ocean Futures Sites of Jean-Michel
Cousteau (yes - Jacques son!) Find information on Nemo's home - the coral reef
FINS (Fish
Information Service) Finding Nemo - search this site for information and
pictures about your Nemo character
Enchanted Learning -
More information about Coral Reefs and your Nemo character
Starfish - This
site comes from professors at the University of Buffalo in New York. Excellent
information on Echinoderms. This site offers lab tutorials and study aids that help
to explain some of the vocabulary. Click on the Starfish link. It will take
you to a page that contains the starfish Asterias forbesi. This page gives the
taxonomy and 6 clickable thumbnail images. The images are excellent and labeled.
Horseshoe
Crabs - Everything you could possibly want to know about horseshoe crabs.
Many great photos!
