Anime is Japanese animation, sometimes also called Japanimation . Japan has a long tradition of producing quality animation. In fact, some of my favorite childhood cartoons were actually imported from Japan: Speed Racer, Kimba, the White Lion, Astro Boy , Marine Boy , Battle of the Planets, Gigantor , Star Blazers , Robotech, and many more. But that doesn't even scratch the tip of the iceberg of what's out there. The cool thing is, not only do they make children's shows, but they also make quality animation for all ages, even grownups!

OTAKON - The East Coast's first and best Anime convention! I was Con Chair in 1997, by the way.

Anime/Manga Series I Like

  • Kimagure Orange Road

  • KOR is one of my favorite series, a light, funny high-school romantic comedy with a dash of ESP for flavor.  I like it simply because it makes me feel nostalgic for when I was in junior high (Back when I actually was in junior high, I wouldn't have thought that would ever be possible!).
  • Maison Ikkoku

  • Another romantic comedy I like. A student trying to get into college falls in love with the young widow who runs his boarding house. Things are complicated by the chaotic antics of the other residents of the house. The creator, Rumiko Takahashi, is the most popular female manga artist in Japan, and this is the series that really shows her talent, because it isn't based on slapstick and gimmicks. "Just a show about nothing..." ; )
If ony the American dub had been any good... sigh.

  • Patlabor

  • Patlabor could have been another dumb giant robot show, but instead the creative team chose to keep the whole thing believable and focus on the characters.  The trials and tribulations of a police unit assigned to police the use of giant robots called "labors," a job which gets them treated as a combination white elephant (when things are slow) and scapegoat (the rest of the time).  Be sure to check out the Patlabor movies, which make Disney's recent stuff look like finger-painting (the DVDs are nice!).

  • GUNNM/Battle Angel Alita An s.f./cyberpunk manga heavy on action, cyborgs and mecha, notable for artist/writer Yukito Kishiro's brilliant black-and-white illustration. Translated by VIZ in america, and the two anime OAVs are available through A.D. Vision.
    • Broken Angel - A good home page with links to more of the same.
  • Slayers - Hilarious over-the-top swords & sorcery. Linna Inverse, sorceress supreme, travels the world with her sidekicks in a quest for justice, money, the betterment of all mankind, and food. Not necessarily in that order. And, the English dub is actually very good!
