The Moose, (Alces alces) or Elk as they are known in Europe and Asia, is the largest member of the deer family, or Cervidae. They live in boreal forests and wetlands throughout the Northern Hemisphere. Many people believe that moose are slow-witted, clumsy and grouchy, but this is not the case. They can run up to 35 mph, swim as fast as 6 mph and can swim as far as 10 miles. They can also dive up to 20 feet in search of food and are pretty docile most of the time. A male moose, called a bull, can sniff out a female, called a cow, from a mile away during mating season. Female moose are very protective and nurturing mothers.

The information contained in this site was gained primarily through two books many years ago and has been confirmed by me through several hundred hours of moose observation and photography. Those two books are: Moose: Giant of the Northern Forest, by Bill Silliker, Jr. from Fire Fly Books ©1998 and Seasons of the Moose with text by Jennie Promack and Photographs by Thomas J. Sanker from Peregrine Smith Books ©1992.

All of the photographs on this site were taken by myself and my boyfriend, Scott.
