  Dr. Heiber & Big Grin

Hi! I'm Dr. Kathi Heiber - originally from Cleveland, Ohio.  I graduated from Ohio State University in 1979, and began practicing in Brewster, NY.  I spent my first few years treating farm animal, horses and pets, so I have some "James Herriot stories" of my own to tell.

In 1984 Dr. Kosacz and I founded South Putnam Animal Hospital and were fortunate to build a new facility on the same location in 1997.

I have been very involved in local activities over the years including 4-H programs, career day visits at local schools and serving as a trustee for the Mahopac Public Library.

When I am not working or doing community activities you can bet that I'm riding my  Thoroughbred "Big Grin".  He is boarded at a stable in Putnam Valley, NY.  My dog "Pi", a Welsh Corgi/Jack Russell mix, comes to the barn and loves to go out for trail rides with Grin and me.   Pi & Inca

My two house cats are both adoptees from the hospital.  "Inca" is on the shy side while "Moby" is always trying to sit on your lap!

Cynthia Kosacz V.M.D.

Hi! I'm Dr. Cynthia (Cindy) Kosacz, originally from Providence, RI.  I received my B.S. from University of New Hampshire and graduated from University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1976.  My first veterinary work was here in Mahopac for two years doing "mixed practice" some farm animals, lots of horses and small animals.  I then worked for other veterinarians for five years, primarily treating dogs and cats before opening South Putnam Animal Hospital with Dr. Heiber in January 1984. Though at times I miss providing working with large animals, I really enjoy providing veterinary care to dogs, cats and some pocket pets.

Felini, a small grey tiger kitty keeps us entertained at home and helps socialize the dogs. Currently I am raising my third Guiding Eyes for the Blind puppy, a lovely black Labrador Retriever named "G-Lee". Raising potential guide dog puppies has taught me a lot and gives me lots of pleasure.  When "Olympia" the second puppy I raised, was released from training, I adopted her.  Now she and I are a Delta Society Certified Therapy Team and make visits for AAT (Animal Assisted Therapy).  We also do agility training classes for fun and exercise.  The elements of training as well as the study of animal behavior is an area of special interest for me  in my learning journey.

I enjoy gardening and raising orchids.  I am a cooperative extension master gardener and also serve on the Board of Directors of Putnam Family and Community Services.  Hiking, playing tennis, and skiing keep me outdoors year round and add to the  fun and balance in my life.  I feel blessed by the people and animals in my life who make my days fulfilling and meaningful.  Thank you all for visiting us at the South Putnam Animal Hospital web site!

Judith Mason D.V.M.

Hi! I'm Dr. Judith Mason.  I graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1983.  Moving to New York after graduation, I eventually found my way to South Putnam Animal Hospital in January 1988.  It looks like I am here to stay!

I have two wonderful children, a son born in December 1990 and a daughter born in June 1993.  My daughter has already shown signs of wanting to become a veterinarian!

Glen and Jason are the family cats.  Jason's had his share of medical problems, so I can really relate to the difficulties of living with an animal who has a chronic illness.  Both cats were strays appearing at animal hospitals where I've worked. (Glen showed up at SPAH!)   I look forward to the near future when our schedules allow us to add a puppy to our family.

When not caring for pets at SPAH or taking care of my children, I enjoy spending my time swimming, biking and gardening.

Julie Fixman D.V.M.

Hi! I am Dr. Julie Fixman.  I am a graduate of the Cornell University College of  Veterinary Medicine.  Following graduation, I practiced near Baltimore, Maryland, where I became adept at "picking" blue crabs and boating on the Chesapeake Bay.  The crabs were great, but I missed being close to my family in New York (not to mention decent bagels), so I returned to the north and joined South Putnam Animal Hospital in 2001.

I enjoy the daily challenges of veterinary practice, particularly ophthalmology, surgery, and pocket pets (ferrets, rabbits, rodents).  The wonderful pets and owners have truly made me feel at home here.

I share my life outside of work with my husband, two cats, and  a Golden Retriever named Charlotte (Charlie to her friends, which includes just about everyone!).  When I'm not vacuuming up pet fur, I enjoy gardening, cooking, and going to the theater.  Charlie and I do a lot of hiking around the area's great state parks and conservation areas and we are taking classes to learn agility, a canine sport that involves running a course of jumps, tunnels, and other obstacles.  Charlie is alot more agile than her mom!
