Our trip to Egypt

In the Spring of 2001 we visited Carlos' sister and her family who were living near Cairo, Egypt.  We spent a lot of time touring Egypt.  We traveled by planes, trains and automobiles to see 13 cities and numerous temples and pyramids.  It was a fantastic trip, only made better by the time we got to spend with family. We got a little carried away with our new digital camera and took over 1100 photos and short video clips while we were in Egypt. Don't worry, we have narrowed the selection down considerably.  We have gathered our most memorable shots in the Photo Album.  Enjoy.

Trip Journal

During our visit to Egypt, we traveled around the country quite a lot.  Here is a journal of our Trip:

Part 1 : Cairo

We spent our first few days in Egypt staying with the Newey gang in Ma'adi, a suburb of Cairo.  In addition to being gracious hosts, they were excellent tour guides.  We visited the Egyptian Museum and the Great Pyramids of Giza.  We also got the official photo: Tourists w/Camel and Pyramids.

Part 2 : Nile Cruise

The next part of our trip took us on a cruise down the Nile.  We flew to Luxor and boarded our ship.  We toured sites in Luxor, Karnak, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Aswan, and Philae.  Definitely a highlight of our trip.  Highly recommended if you ever visit Egypt.

Part 3 : Sharm el-Sheikh

The next phase of our vacation was the relaxation phase.  We flew from Aswan to Sharm el-Sheikh, a resort town situated at the bottom of the Sinai peninsula on the Red Sea.  This was a beautiful town in the middle of the stark desert.  We stayed at the Sofitel Resort and were joined by the Neweys.  Madeleine and Max were on break and were able get away.  We had a lot of fun together in the pool and on the beach.  Jacques and I went scuba diving for a day and saw some amazing reef life.  Madeleine and Max went para-sailing, where Max even got to drive the boat!  Sadly, we discovered that I have a rare disorder that causes me to randomly fall off of piers.  I'm in therapy.

Part 4 : Cairo and Alexandria

Alas, our fun in the sun had to end, and we drove back to Cairo.  The next day, Kristina and I took a day trip by train to the port city of Alexandria.  On our last day, we took a drive out into the desert to hunt for fossils.  No dinosaur bones were found, but we found the fossilized remains of several sea shells.

After thoroughly touring Egypt, we were craving some good, old-fashioned, American fast food, and headed back to the states.  We had a great time and were excited to see the Neweys and their home.  We caught them just in time as they are transferring to Jakarta, Indonesia.  Time to start saving up the vacation time!
