Risk Assessment in Support of Waste Site Cleanup
KERA provides human health and ecological risk assessment services according to a tiered Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA) approach applicable to state remediation regulations, including (but not limited to) Massachusetts (Massachusetts Contingency Plan), New Hampshire (Risk Characterization and Management Policy), Rhode Island (Remediation Regulations), Connecticut (Remediation Standards Regulations) and Vermont (Corrective Action). Evaluations are based on site compound detection data, toxicity data and exposure information, described in general terms below. References and project summaries are available upon request.
RISK ASSESSMENT
Data Evaluation
Available compound detection data is evaluated for its adequacy to support the required risk assessment based on current and/or future exposure scenarios. Recommendations for data collection are provided where applicable.
Risk Characterization
- Tier 1: Comparison of soil and/or groundwater contaminant concentrations to state cleanup standards; conservatively protects human health and public welfare; risk to safety and the environment are evaluated separately.
- Tier 2: Modification or development of supplementary soil and groundwater cleanup standards; applied as in Tier 1.
- Tier 3: Cumulative site-specific evaluation of human health risks; incorporates compound concentrations, toxicity data and exposure information. Risks to safety, public welfare and the environment are evaluated separately.
- Risk to the environment
- Ecological screening
- Ecological risk characterization (subcontracted)
Documentation
Procedures
and results are fully documented and presented to the client in
the form of a final report, or as a modified document formatted
to be inserted into a comprehensive report. Preliminary drafts are
submitted as necessary.
