Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare

Our Production
Measure for Measure has been called a "problem play". It is considered
by many to be a difficult combination of comedy, drama and moral issues.
Our production is a pure comedy that still acknowledges the darker parts
of human nature. The Baron's Players draws on its performers' familiarity
with Commedia dell'arte and the conventions of the Elizabethan era to
explore the humor in this story of blackmail, unlikely romance and the
abuse of power.
The Story
The Duke of Vienna abdicates his responsibilities as a leader by handing power over to the virtuous Angelo and pretending to leave the city. He hopes that Angelo will make the people respect Vienna's laws while he watches in disguise. When Angelo falls for Isabella, the sister of a condemned man, Angelo gives in to his lust and offers to pardon the brother in return for sex. The Duke, dressed as a friar, tries to expose Angelo and rescue the condemned man all while falling in love with Isabella, who is about to join a nunnery. |
