French Wall's Letter to Mayor Menino

February 17, 1997

The Honorable Thomas Menino
Boston City Hall
Boston MA 02110

Dear Mayor Menino:

Your advocacy of censorship of computer delivered information at the Boston Public Library is appalling and should be immediately reconsidered. What's next--hiring a consulting firm to cull the books on library shelves for those deemed offensive to right-wing yahoo sensibilities?

What kids need to be protected from is Big Brother moralists deciding for them what they can't see, read, or think.

The same week you announced your censorship drive, Khristian Koalition types were holding a confab in Boston. You appear to have been a tool of their far-reaching plans (egged on by the reactionary peddlers at the Herald and--later--Globe) to khristianize both the Internet and our libraries.

Shame on you for being such a willing dupe to such a contemptible and dangerous assault on the First Amendment, the rights of libraries, the people of Boston, and our city's reputation.

Yours truly,

French Wall, Editor
