2001 Baseball

Goal This Year:
Um, 36 games, same as 1999. The situation improved last year, but there still seems to be aways to go regarding rearranging supposed priorities in order to attend baseball games. The Red Sox hiking ticket prices 40% won't help either. I still think I can do it! but it will have to involve more minor league games (which is generally a better approach anyway).

Baseball in Years Before That
Tuesday, April 10 Baltimore Orioles (1) vs. Boston Red Sox (10) Section 25 (grandstand) Feels like we never left .. the seats are not any more comfortable costing $12 more. Nomo gets a win first game following his no-hitter last week. No shut-out but Daubach had 5 RBI (1 HR).
Saturday, April 14 New York Yankees (3) vs. Boston Red Sox (2) Section 7 Row 14 LOVE Trot Nixon; please don't ever send him away. The guy we scalped the 4th ticket to bought us all hot chocolate! And it was my fault for mentioning Pedro's no-hitter into the 6th that brought it down; our friendly seatmate wished for a tie game when we were up 2-0. A *tie game*!!
Friday, April 27 Kansas City Royals (2) vs. Boston Red Sox (9) Section 15 Row 7 I was jetlagged but still made it happily through the game. 3-run homer from Manny, and Carl had a grand slam.
Saturday, May 14 Oakland A's (3) vs. Boston Red Sox (9) Section 25 Row 2 Pedro: 12K, gave up 1 3-run Giambi HR. Spent the whole game talking about last night ...
Sunday, May 13 Oakland A's (4) vs Boston Red Sox (5) Section 15 Row 7 In honor of Mother's Day no offensive words were spoken at Fenway Park. We observed further proof Manny is just a MACHINE; ask for RBI and you shall receive!!!! Intentionally walked in the 10th with 1 out, score tied. And in the bottom of the 11th, Varitek had a count of 2-0. He swung lamely at a crummy pitch and one of the two old guys in front of me scoring the game (on tiny index cards, cool) said, "that's why he'll never hit a home run." As I was pondering that (geez, was he right??) he hit it straight into the right field stands.
Monday, May 28 New York Yankees (4) vs. Boston Red Sox (3) Section 92 Row AA (crank your neck sideways) Cone lasted only 2 2/3 innings, very sad time.
Wednesday, May 30 Durham Bulls at Rochester Red Wings   free tickets and extra innings! LOTS of embarrassing but highly entertaining defensive blunders ... on both sides. And Pat Borders too!
Tuesday, June 5 Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox Section 25 Row 9 argh. missed this game b/c of work trip ... was 18 lovely innings. maybe the only bright side was a newly-married couple used my tickets for their celebratory outing. as it should be (even though they didn't stay till the end).
Thursday, June 7 Detroit Tigers (1) vs. Boston Red Sox (8) Section 25 Row 6 yeah! good times roll on for Wakefield but who knew that Varitek's FABULOUS catch was going to be such a mistake? guess I saw his last home run for awhile ... too bad they only came over a period of a few weeks. (CJ pitched too, was OK but it didn't do Detroit any good :-)
Thursday, June 14 Anaheim Angels (4) at San Francisco Giants (10)   how is it that one manages to spend so much time in SF and not see a BB home run? isn't that part of what scorekeeping is for ... so you can see who the next at-bats are before you go for your rest/refreshment breaks? I have only myself to blame. I think we did see Joyner's last career hit, though.
Monday, June 18 Seattle Mariners (3) at Oakland A's (4)   Concrete stadium that seemed even vaster than Cynergy Field did last year (but third level not nearly as steep). Kept it close for some 9th-inning nail-biting.
Sunday, July 1 Seattle Mariners (5) at Anaheim Angels (0)   free ticket to the left field club deck b/c the guys behind me quibbled about the location, doh. Perfect view of Guillen's concussion-causing collision with Martin and sweet catch by Gipson in the 9th to help with Freddy Garcia's CG shutout. Seattle was not in need of another win but by the end, what can you do when Anaheim didn't even try ... root for Garcia. From Jim Caple: "Rally Monkey: He's one year old -- or 364 days, 23 hours and 55 minutes longer than any Angels rally this year." yeah.
Friday, July 6 Atlanta Braves (6) vs. Boston Red Sox (5) Section 25 Row 11 I think EVERYONE in the park saw the Cleveland game last night on TV and thought the Sox were coming from behind just to give us the experience of seeing something so nice in person. Whoo! it was great! even though they didn't pull it off. And alid took one in the gut for Jose -- unghgh!
Saturday, July 28 Chicago White Sox (3) vs. Boston Red Sox (1) Section 26 Row 14 sandwiched in between the triumphant Saberhagen return on Friday, and the complete Nomah party scene on Sunday, on Saturday we get ... Carl. Yip yahoo: 0 for 4, K to end the 8th with 2 men on. yow, thanks for the bonus on the field: misplay off the wall to let Lee triple in a Chicago run, and a second later score himself.
Wednesday, August 1 Anaheim Angels vs. Boston Red Sox Section 25 Row 10 unavoidably off for work purposes once again ... raffled off the tix to NESE
Thursday, August 16 Charlotte Knights at Indianapolis Indians Upper deck 1B side. WK still coaches 3B, who knew? Sat behind the (television?) camera guys, slightly entertaining. Nice park with an upper deck.
Friday, August 17 Charlotte Knights at Indianapolis Indians Upper deck 3B side. Free tickets once again. Poor Indians though, man, those last few innings were painful to see.
Friday, August 31 New York Yankees (3) vs. Boston Red Sox (1) Section 24 Row 9 Sticky Fenway seemed OK for awhile with Castillo's nice 1-2-3 innings (even against Clemens!) but that was before he mysteriously disappeared in the 8th inning - Hillenbrand fell asleep and Izzy dropped the ball. Justice made it to first and tacked another run onto Posada's HR off LOWE. Why could HE not have broken his toe??? (both of them) Another scary thing was seeing the same damn Yankee fan that was in the row ahead of us in April ... section 7. By the end the place was just gross and hot.
Monday, September 3 Syracuse Sky Chiefs at Pawtucket Red Sox
Wednesday, September 19 Tampa Bay Devil Rays (12) at Boston Red Sox (2) Section 36 Row 6 The very Septemberest of all Septembers.
Friday, September 21 Detroit Tigers vs. Boston Red Sox Section 25 Row 7
Thursday, September 27 Baltimore Orioles vs. Boston Red Sox Section 25 Row 7 Last regular-season game at Fenway
