Citation
Anatoly Chubais is named 1996 Man of the Year as someone who made the most difference in the course of events in Russia. During the year, there were five high moments in the Russian political drama when Mr. Chubias played the pivotal role:
- In March he was instrumental in convincing President Yeltsin not to cancel the elections, against the advice of General Korzhakov
- In May he masterminded a turnaround in the polls thus making Yeltsin's victory possible
- In June he succeeded in deposing the hardliner group of Korzhakov-Barsukov-Soskovets
- In October he engineered the ouster of General Lebed from the Security Council
- In November-December he helped maintain stability as a proxy of the ailing president.
Each of these events marks a historical turning point. This record of accomplishment makes Mr. Chubais the most productive politician of the year.
