Father

Half asleep, As the sun rose today,
I found that I had a stray thought.
As I often do.

As I lay still, in the dimness,
I remembered and I heard his laugh,
As he pulled back my covers
On a chill Sunday morning,
To wake me with a grin
As I yelled at the cold
And clutched the covers to my chest
As he laughed, and told me
I just have time for pancakes
Before church.

My Father

I remember.
The day long ago.
The afternoon sun
Beat on my head.
He is planting trees,
Lying stones for a walkway.
Sweat pouring off him
As he lifts the rocks.
A garden place for us,
A place of peace for us.

My Father

Oh, and I do so remember,
His patience, with small,
Fumbling hands,
Learning to do
A step at a time,
The things he could do
So quickly, and so well.

My Father

And then I remember his joy,
A light he loved to share.
His smile, of simple pride,
When we showed our scrawls to him,

He would read them
Aloud, as if each phrase
Were a sonnet entire
And threatened to frame
Each crayoned drawing.

My Father

I think of all the times
He held the camera,
Every Christmas, Birthday,
Or just "fun time".
Each one a picture
Of himself.
He is in every picture
Behind everything we did.

My Father

I have my own boy now,
In him I see so much of my self,
And yet, I see someone else too,
A man so strong and good,
With hands so much bigger than mine,
Holding me up,
Holding my hand,
Strong hands, gentle hands.

My Father

Now, as I stretch
And start another day,
I can only do my best,
As he taught.
And say, from my heart,
Thank you.

I love you Daddy,
and I still miss you, sometimes.

If you liked this poem,
feel free to share it with a friend!

Instructions:

E-Mail: If you want to send this to another friend, (and please feel free to do so!) simply right click on the url you will see up there on the tool bar at the top of the page, and copy it.  Then paste it into an e-mail to your friend, inviting them to come see this page, that you have a special message you want them to see!  This is the easiest way to send this page to someone else.

Send the link: With Internet Explorer, on your toolbar, at the top of the page, click on "file", then "send" and select "send link by e-mail" It works pretty much the same with Netscape, too...   Don't select "send PAGE by e-mail", by the way, as it will then insert the entire page into your e-mail letter, and the graphics won't show up on the other end... and it will be annoying...  Just send the link.

ICQ: On ICQ it's even easier!   Simply open up your ICQ console, with this site open as well, and click on the name of someone on your contact list and then click on  where is says"Webpage Address (URL)", and the address will be sent to them automatically!  You can also click on the little "more" button, and send this page to more than one user, all at the same time, through ICQ! (Fun, isn't it?)

Web TV: If you are a webTV user and all you do is hit OPTIONS while you have this page open, then put the box around SEND and key in e-mail address you want to send it to, and hit SEND.
