What is the March of Dimes?

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. The March of Dimes carries out this mission through the Campaign for Healthier Babies which includes programs of research, community service, education and advocacy.

With the help of the FBLA-PBL, the March of Dimes has made these important strides:

  • Four scientists whose research received support from the March of Dimes won the Nobel Prize.
  • In 1976, the March of Dimes established a system of neonatal intensive care units to care for sick babies.
  • In 1985, March of Dimes funded research contributed to the development of surfactant therapy--helping to save the lives of thousands of premature babies.
  • In 1996, the March of Dimes led the successful effort to encourage the FDA to fortify enriched grain products with folic acid, a B vitamin that helps prevent certain birth defects.
  • Also in 1996, clinical trials of nitric oxide treatment proved effective in helping to save the lives of babies with a life-threatening lung disease.

These accomplishments were achieved because of the support and dedication of March of Dimes volunteers like the members of FBLA-PBL.
