Inverse Equation
by Douglas Turek
The translight diodes started sparking as soon as I approached
the black hole. I knew that I'd have to do this as efficiently as
possible or I'd never reach home. The hyperelectrodes shut down
right on schedule. I knew that by straining them beyond their
limits, they'd drop me right back into normal space, where a
black hole awaited to grab me right back into hyperreality.
If I didn't time this perfectly, I'd be torn into shreds. Of
course, near a black hole, time is very hard to keep track of.
The last remaining glow died from the hyperelectrodes and my
throat stretched out to the size of the empire state builiding.
I could sense a slight tingling in my extremities and knew this
to be an illusion based on the incredibly long time, relatively
speaking, that my nerves were taking to react. That tingling also
told me that my suit was growing hot, or was that cold?
Either way, the black hole should be grabbing me me grabbing
suit time relatively empire state apparent glow distortion of
extremities space and time near a black hole must fight torn to
shreds right on schedule of course near a black hole sense a
slight nerves illusion drop me normal hyperreality illusion near
a black hole time running backwards and as I'm about to must
fight must be torn to shreds right on schedule must illusion
about to blast off time this perfectly illusion that tingling
also told me that tingling no illusion near a black hole time is
very hard to keep track of only two weeks from now I will
approach the black hole for the first time second time first time
that tingling also told me also told told told me something what
did it tell me?
Did I just hit the autojump on the hyperelectrodes? I must
have. Of course! The black hole was at a different frequency. But
how did I know the right thing to do? I can't quite remember what
happened. There's a slight tingling in my extremities. Have to
check myself out on the autodoctor. I feel funny. That's strange,
the 'doc says all vitals are within normal . Have to do a
complete scan on the nerves.
I'm scared by the results. Autodoc says my nerve signals are
being modulated by a residual hyperspace field emanating from my
own skin. Did a more complete scan and found out that the edge of
my dermis just abruptly ends into hypersapce. I have to
investigate.
I have analyzed the scans more thoroughly. The modulation of my
own nerves is an identical match up to my own nerves. The 'doc
says that it's as if I were joined with myself at the skin. I
have decided that is not impossible. I was near a black hole and
I'm still not more than a few hours away. Reality does flip flops
near a black hole, and while we've developed translight diodes to
compensate for this, they are by no means foolproof.
I've analyzed the ship's command records and found out that there
is indeed a record of the autojump being activated, but not
through the jump button. the command came about through
electrical interference. Now how could that happen?
Of course, if my skin could be attached to my own skin out of
time, so could the ship's!
I altered course to point right at the black hole, then made a
few alterations. I would approach the hole at a strange angle. At
my closest approach, I could take the risk I knew I had to take.
I approached the hole. The tingling in my extremities grew. I
programmed the ship to do everything for me in case I passed out.
I passed out.
I had the ship generate the necessary command code for hitting
the autojump as an electrical modulation in the skin of the ship,
only backwards. It must have worked because I'm here. I'm not
going to look for a better explanation.
